Covid-19 and Charity
Covid-19 is kind of an International calamity, and face it we still do not know whether the Chinese did it deliberately. If it had originated in any other country we may not have speculated so much, but the Chinese do not have a trustworthy track record. Sorry I digress.
If you have not been hit by this Lockdown etc. and are in a position to do charity, I find that many people are doing different things..I just spoke to a few.
- A friend with a factory and a few employees has promised all his employees 3 months salary and a soft loan to pay for term insurance premium, medical insurance premium, and school fees.
- Another friend is paying 2 instalments of the EMI for his domestic help’s husband’s autorickshaw. He is calling it a loan, so that there is a sense of responsibility – and says he is mentally prepared to pay another 2 months if need be.
- A friend has asked his friendly neighborhood hotelier to feed 17 people everyday for 15 days. It is costing him Rs. 15000 for the whole thing – the hotel is giving at a very low price. These are the security guards, hotel employees, etc.
So each person is choosing his/ her method of doing charity..everybody need not give money to big charities.
In fact 5km from your house there will be an NGO trying to mobilize food, food grains, etc for the poor people in the slums of your city – you could join them.
There seems to be no shortage of veggies available in Nerul, Navi Mumbai where I stay, but the logistics is a problem. The communication to the police has not been good and one vendor was stuck for 3 hours with the police. Not sure how he ‘escaped’ and how much it cost him. He did not tell us any of the morbid details, but yes he lost 3 hours at least.
Take your pick.
