It is unbelievable about how much wealth philosophies we have in our tradition. Let me enumerate some of them from what I have heard, listened, read.

It is fairly obvious that without good wealth philosophies we could not have had 33% of world GDP. Remember if you extend this to Hindu Rashtra – and include countries like Indonesia,..etc. it goes to 49% of world GDP. Not insignificant. More importantly we should condemn the idiots who coined the term “Hindu growth rate” – it should read “Nehru growth rate” – simply because that man never got rattled by the slow growth rate. In fact India’s worst growth EVER must be during the Congress rule. Oops sorry, but had to mention this shit.

How does Ayodhya Look? It has well laid out roads, broad roads well PAVED, it has earmarked and well divided roads. It has good markets, and people are happy and virtuous. It has 96 miles of well ramified roads along the Sharayu..and has 24 miles of internal roads.

There is a lot of mention of economics in Mahabharata too. Veda Vyasa, Yudhishtar, Bheeshma, Krishna, have all spoken about economics. In fact even Bharata gives a detailed description (real Valmiki Ramanaya for the details)..it shows amazing growth rate for the 14 years of Van vas by Ram. Phew, it is awesome.

Let me stick to small quotes..

Yudhistra says “Dharma and Artha are united – it is difficult to achieve one without the other”

Chanakya / Kautilya: “Artha is the foremost Dharma”

Wealth acquired by Dharma leads to Happiness.

Bheeshma: Dharma flows from good Artha (Dharma flows from Wealth)

Enterprise is the MAIN cause of creating wealth.

“Lakshmi” does not go to the lazy and unenterprising.

Self Confidence and Courage are both needed for creating Wealth.

Wealth can be created only by the competent and hard working people.

The government should not take away the land belonging to the hard working farmer who owns fertile land.

If a farmer does not work on his farm, the farm should be taken away and given to the hard working farmer. This is the duty of the state.

Bheeshma says the characteristics of a wealthy state are:

a) people are HEALTHY.

b) agricultural land is with the hard working peasents

c) the state does not ignore agriculture, technology, and commerce.

Narada asks Yudhishtara:

Are your farmers happy?

Are your farms irrigated? (India had 85% of its land irrigated -with tanks on 5% of the lands…)

Barren lands should be given to the people to be cultivated

If a farmer is going through a drought, the King should give him a loan at @1% p.a. interest. As soon as the difficult times are over, the peasant should repay the loan.

Taxation should be like the sun sucking the moisture from mother earth – to be given back as rain. It is not the purpose of the sun to keep all the water to himself..
